First and Second Opinion

A second opinion — without detours.

You can refer yourself directly, even without a referral from your family doctor. The pathway is clearly structured and designed for an honest assessment — including when this means advising against surgery.

When does a second opinion make sense?

A second opinion is always valuable when a treatment decision has lasting consequences: before a planned operation, in chronic complaints despite therapy, or with a diagnosis you cannot confidently make sense of. The aim is not to criticise an existing recommendation, but to put your decision on a broader, evidence-based foundation.

  • A recommended spine operation about which you are uncertain
  • A recommendation for fusion — could a less invasive alternative work?
  • Persistent back or leg pain despite conservative therapy
  • Unclear or conflicting findings on MRI, CT or X-ray
  • Previously operated spine with renewed symptoms
  • Osteoporotic vertebral fracture — conservative or operative?
  • An independent assessment ahead of an insurance decision

How the referral works

Send your enquiry

Briefly describe your situation using the online form. After your enquiry has arrived, you can send prior reports (medical letters, MRI/CT images, surgical reports) by replying to the confirmation email.

Review and reply

Within a few working days I will personally review your documents and come back with an appointment proposal or a follow-up question. Urgent situations are handled promptly.

Consultation

In the personal consultation we go through the imaging, the findings and the clinical examination together. You receive a concrete recommendation — conservative, watchful waiting or surgical — with the respective benefits and risks.

Written report

You receive a clear written report — on request also addressed to your treating physicians. This gives you a documented basis for your decision.

Coverage in Switzerland

A medical second opinion is generally covered by the mandatory Swiss basic health insurance (obligatorische Krankenpflegeversicherung), provided there is a medical indication. Several Swiss insurers explicitly recommend or even require a second opinion for defined elective spine procedures. For self-pay consultations or special situations, we will clarify the conditions transparently in advance.

Please note: The exact conditions depend on your insurance and the specific case. If in doubt, we will clarify before the appointment. If you are insured under a family doctor model or a Telmed plan, the first enquiry must go through your family doctor — see the next section.

Family doctor and Telmed insurance plans

Patients insured under a family doctor model (Hausarztmodell) or a Telmed/Callmed plan cannot self-refer directly — the first point of contact is your family doctor or the telemedical advisory service of your insurer. Without this gatekeeping step, a specialist consultation is generally not (or only partially) covered by basic insurance.

So that you don't have to start from scratch, here is a template you can adapt. Your email program will open with a pre-prepared message that you can edit personally — greeting to your specific family doctor, your concrete situation, your own words. The decision to refer of course remains with your family doctor; the template merely formulates the request and lists my contact details for reference. The email is sent by you from your own email program.

Adapt the template
What you enter here appears in the letter in the first person. You can still freely adapt the text afterwards.

If you do not know your family doctor's email address, leave the field empty — your email program will open the template with an empty recipient field.

International patients

Enquiries from abroad are welcome. The consultation and written report are available in German, English or French. If travel for an in-person consultation is not feasible, after review of your documents I can offer a preliminary assessment by video consultation — the final assessment, however, always requires a personal examination.

Send your enquiry

Please complete the fields as fully as possible. Required fields are marked with *. Your enquiry is sent exclusively to me personally — not to a general pool.

For acute symptoms, please do not wait: if you have sudden paralysis, saddle anaesthesia, bladder or bowel disturbance or uncontrollable pain, please go directly to the nearest emergency department or call the Swiss medical emergency number 144. This online enquiry is reviewed within a few working days — immediate handling cannot be guaranteed.

Consents

Submission currently goes from your email program to kontakt@bigdon.ch and is generally not end-to-end encrypted in transit. For particularly sensitive content I recommend secure channels (HIN, encrypted email) — HIN integration is in preparation.

Note: This page is statically served. The form generates a prepared email addressed to me. For medically sensitive data I recommend secure channels (HIN, encrypted email). A genuine server-side submission with file upload and encryption will be added in a later stage.
